Microcement: an ideal material even for humid environments

For those who have bought a new house, or are thinking of renovating their current home, microcement can be a dynamic and ideal solution.

In fact, this material gives style to the environment and also protects against dampness.

Let's find out the main features of this solution for indoor and outdoor spaces.

Is resin the same as concrete?

Both resin and concrete coatings are continuous. Therefore, there are no visible joints in both cases.

The substantial difference between these two materials lies in their composition. In fact, resin flooring is made of polymers that harden by chemical reaction. This type of material produces a typical glossy effect

On the other hand, Microcement has a cement base that guarantees greater materiality and breathability and a more natural effect than resin.

What is microcement?

Isoplam® offers you its Microverlay® microcement, an innovative design surface with an extremely reduced thickness. Microverlay® is only 3 millimeters thick and allows you to achieve extraordinary results, creating beautiful continuous surfaces without joints on both horizontal and vertical surfaces. Isoplam® microcement can be used for floors and walls, but also to make furnishing accessories and worktops.

Thanks to the wide range of colors and customizations, Microverlay® adapts to any type of environment, from modern to minimal, from country-style to industrial style.

As we said, microcement is a very dynamic material.

In fact, even Microverlay® microcement by Isoplam®, allows you to choose between:

  • an infinite range of colors
  • a multitude of nuances and effects
  • glossy, matt, material, acidified and polished finishes
  • realization of both horizontal and vertical textures, thanks to the special Isoplam rollers and decorative tools

Microcement for humid environments

Microcement is also suitable for coating humid environments. In fact, microcement boasts resistance to water and steam among its characteristics. This makes it a suitable material to be used in all those environments where water and moisture can damage the coating and the floor.

Why does the floor sweats?

There are various answers to this question. First of all we must say that the problem of wet flooring is not trivial.

If your home is located on the ground floor or basement, wet flooring can be a symptom of a rising damp problem.

The rising damp is due to the presence of water in the subsoil and could derive from the lack of proper insulation of the floor against the ground, in addition to the probable presence of water veins in the subsoil.

On the other hand, if your home is on a higher level, without any direct contact with the ground, damp flooring can be the result of a break in the pipes of the heating system or water system.

Damp floor treatment

In both cases, to definitively solve the issue, the first step to take is to contact a professional who will eliminate the problem. Once the subfloor has been fixed, you can use microcement for your new floor.

How to coat a damp floor

Once the problem of rising damp has been eliminated, according to the techniques identified by the professional depending on the nature of the humidity, you can dedicate yourself to your new floor. Given the tendency to the presence of moisture, it is always a good idea to put vapor barriers that separate the screed from the microcement - it is very important to remove any possible trace of moisture from the floor.

The application of Microverlay® microcement by Isoplam® begins with the sanding of the concrete surface. Once sanded, two layers of vapor barrier are applied to the concrete with an interposed fiberglass mesh. Then, the actual microcement is laid.

The application consists in the laying of two coats of Microverlay® Base or Medium depending on the product chosen, with intermediate sanding and cleaning. Then, two finish coats are applied to this base, with further sanding and cleaning. The final step involves the application of a protective resin that will give glossy or matte effect to your new microcement floor.

Microcement: installation and cost of realization

How to lay microcement?

If you want to obtain a perfect microcement floor or wall, it is essential to rely on the experience of professionals to realize this work.

What about the costs?

For instance, let’s say you’re wondering the cost of a new bathroom in microcement. In this case, the cost depends on the type of finish chosen and, of course, the size of the bathroom. Another factor that affects the final cost of the work is the possible presence (and quantity) of moisture on the floor to be covered with microcement.

The application of products for the creation of microcement flooring (which must be made in a workmanlike manner) requires a professional qualification for applicators. Thus, Isoplam® regularly organizes "Concreativity workshops" to update Its team of applicators.
